What is Integrative Therapy?

Integrative Therapy is a flexible approach that combines techniques from different therapeutic modalities to meet the unique needs of each individual. Rather than sticking to a single therapeutic method, an integrative therapist draws from a range of approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Humanistic Therapy, Attachment theory, and more, we tailor our interventions to the client’s specific concerns, preferences, and goals. At Inner Narratives, we integrate modalities to aid clients in managing anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges.

How does Integrative Therapy work?

Integrative Therapy starts with understanding the client’s needs, preferences, and life circumstances. The therapist then selects the most appropriate tools and techniques from different therapies to create a personalized treatment plan. This approach ensures that the therapy is adaptable and responsive to changes as the client progresses.

What types of issues can Integrative Therapy help with?

Integrative Therapy can address a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, and stress. Because of its flexible nature, it is particularly beneficial for individuals facing complex or multi-layered issues, as it allows the therapist to use a combination of techniques that best fit the situation.

Is Integrative Therapy right for me?

If you’re looking for a personalized approach to therapy that isn’t limited to one method, Integrative Therapy may be a good fit. It’s ideal for clients who want a therapy experience that evolves as they do, using strategies from various therapeutic models to adapt to their changing needs. We will collaborate with you to identify what works best.

How long does a therapy session last?

Therapy sessions at Inner Narratives generally last 50 minutes. This duration allows clients to address their concerns, delve into their feelings, and progress towards their therapy objectives. Extended sessions are available upon request or for specific treatments.

Is writing for well-being the same as psychotherapy?

Writing for well-being is offered as part of an integrative therapeutic approach. For some people, writing is used alongside talking therapy, while for others, writing itself becomes the primary way of exploring thoughts, feelings, and experiences. The work is always conducted within a therapeutic framework, with a focus on emotional safety and well-being.

Do I need to be good at writing?

No. Writing for well-being is not about producing polished work or having any previous writing experience. The focus is on expression, reflection, and meaning making rather than grammar, structure or literary skill.

What does a session involve?

Sessions may include gentle writing prompts, journaling, reflective exercises or exploring pieces of writing together. The pace and approach are shaped collaboratively, and you’re always in control of what you share.

What kinds of issues can writing for well-being support?

Writing can be particularly helpful for processing emotions, exploring identity, working with anxiety or low mood, making sense of life’s transitions and reconnecting with a sense of self. It can also support people who find it easier to think or express themselves through writing than through talking alone.

How does your training support this work?

I have a degree in creative writing and currently integrate writing-based approaches within my therapy practice. I am currently further developing evidence-informed, ethical and effective ways of using writing therapeutically in client work.

Are these individual or group sessions?

Both. We are currently looking at group sessions, so please contact us.

What does couples therapy involve?

Couples therapy helps partners identify and address issues in their relationship, working with a therapist to find solutions. Together, you’ll discuss concerns, learn better communication and problem-solving skills, and gain insight into each other’s feelings. Therapists understand how poor well-being can affect behaviour and emotions, and assist couples in rebuilding strengths and developing new ones.

What can I expect of the therapist?

Your therapist ensures sessions are regular and confidential, remaining neutral while sometimes offering challenges. They highlight dynamics you might not notice that impact your relationship’s satisfaction. Sessions will explore how your individual feelings and those around the relationship affect both of you, its link to relationship distress, and how upbringing shapes expectations. Strengths you have as a couple will be developed further.

Length and frequency of therapy

There may be some variation in the number of sessions you are offered but for couples therapy to be effective you should have between 15 to 20 sessions over a period of six months or so. Sessions last for 50 minutes and can be offered on a less frequent basis, for example, fortnightly. Some couples will find they require fewer sessions, and some will require more.

Why consider couples therapy?

There are various reasons why people seek couples therapy. Sometimes, relationships have deteriorated, or there’s concern they might. Maintaining a satisfying and stable partnership is often challenging, as factors like work stress, financial worries, parenting, family issues, and health problems can create tension and contribute to depression or other difficulties for one or both partners. When communication breaks down, couples may find it hard to talk to each other. Working with a couples therapist can help improve communication, which is essential for strengthening relationships.

What qualifications do you hold for couples therapy?

I hold a qualification called Couple Therapy for Depression awarded by Tavistock Relationships, and can be found on their approved practitioners list on their website.

Who is supervision for?

I offer supervision to therapists, counsellors, and other helping professionals across a variety of modalities. My supervision supports both early career practitioners and experienced clinicians, providing a space for reflection, professional development, and guidance on complex clinical work.

What happens in a supervision session?

Sessions typically involve reflecting on client work, exploring clinical challenges, ethical considerations, and therapeutic approaches, and considering personal reactions or countertransference. The focus is collaborative and tailored to your needs, helping you develop both confidence and competence in your practice.

Is supervision confidential?

Yes. All supervision sessions are held confidentially within professional and ethical guidelines. Notes are kept for supervision purposes only and shared only with your consent or where legally required (e.g. safeguarding concerns).

Can supervision be online?

I offer both video and telephone supervision to suit your professional needs and availability.

How does supervision support professional development?

Supervision provides an opportunity to reflect on practice, explore new ideas, consolidate learning and ensure ethical and professional standards are maintained. Regular supervision can also contribute to CPD requirements and support growth as a practitioner.

Do you offer group supervision?

Yes. Group supervision can provide a supportive environment to learn from colleagues, share perspectives and reflect collaboratively. Group and individual supervision are both tailored to the needs of participants.

How often should I attend supervision?

Frequency depends on your professional requirements, caseload, and stage of development. Many practitioners attend monthly, but some may benefit from fortnightly sessions or shorter check-ins as appropriate.
